Mellaril

Active Ingredient: Thioridazine

Mellaril is an anti-psychotic medication in a group of drugs called phenothiazines which is used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.

General information
Mellaril is part of a group of drugs known as typical antipsychotics. It is a medication that is used for treating schizophrenia in adults and children. The drug blocks or lessens the effects of dopamine, a chemical in the brain. Dopamine may be elevated in people with schizophrenia. This medication is not a cure for schizophrenia. It only helps to control symptoms. Mellaril is usually given after other medications have been tried without successful treatment of schizophrenia.
Directions
Take Mellaril exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The recommended starting dose for treatment of schizophrenia is 50 mg to 100 mg three times daily. Your doctor may gradually increase your dose as necessary, up to a maximum of Mellaril 800 mg total per day. It is usually taken by mouth two to four times a day. You can take the medication with or without food.
Precautions
Before taking Mellaril you should talk with your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, a heart rhythm disorder, low levels of calcium or potassium in your blood, past or present breast cancer, liver or kidney disease, severe asthma or breathing problems, a history of seizures, Parkinson's disease, adrenal gland tumor, enlarged prostate or urination problems, glaucoma. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase some of the side effects. Mellaril can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness.
Contraindications
Do not use Mellaril if you have brain damage, bone marrow depression, severe heart disease, a heart rhythm disorder, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients of the medication, are using large amounts of alcohol or medicines that make you sleepy. You should not use this drug if you are taking: antibiotics, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, certain HIV/AIDS medications, cancer medications, heart rhythm medications, narcotic pain medicines.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have dizziness, fainting, fast heartbeat, twitching or uncontrollable movements of your eyes, lips, tongue, face, arms, or legs, tremor, drooling, trouble swallowing, problems with balance or walking, feeling restless, high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, rapid breathing, seizure (convulsions), decreased night vision, watery eyes, increased sensitivity to light, pale skin, bleeding, sore throat, flu symptoms, urinating less than usual, nausea, stomach pain, skin rash, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), joint pain, swelling, swollen glands, muscle aches, chest pain, vomiting, unusual thoughts or behavior, weak pulse. Less serious side effects may include: dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, dry mouth, stuffy nose, constipation, blurred vision, breast swelling, changes in your menstrual periods, weight gain, impotence, increased or decreased interest in sex, sleep problems, strange dreams, itching or skin rash. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: birth control pills, blood thinners (warfarin), fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, pindolol, insulin, asthma medications, bronchodilators, medication for nausea, vomiting, propranolol, sertraline, tricyclic antidepressants (clomipramine, doxepin, nortriptyline, trimipramine, protriptyline), lithium. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias), low blood pressure (hypotension), slow heart rate (bradycardia) or rapid heart rate (tachycardia), drowsiness, confusion, seizures, difficulty breathing, intestinal obstruction, coma.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Store it in a tight container. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
