General information
Synalar cream is used to treat the inflammation and itching caused by a number of skin conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, seborrhea and psoriasis. Fluocinolone is a steroid and works by reducing the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation.
Directions
Wash and dry your hands before using. Clean and dry the affected area. Apply a thin film of medication to the affected area and gently rub in, usually 3-4 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Do not bandage, cover, or wrap the area. Plastic film covering (such as plastic wrap) is sometimes used when treating psoriasis.
Precautions
Use this medication on the skin only, avoid getting it in the eyes, nose or mouth. Do not use it on the face, groin or underarms. Do not use Synalar in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Topical steroid medicine can be absorbed through the skin, which may cause steroid side effects throughout the body. Do not use if there is an infection or sore in the area to be treated. Rarely, using corticosteroid medications for a long time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes as topical steroid medicines absorbed through the skin may increase the glucose levels in your blood or urine.
Contraindications
You should not use Synalar if you are allergic to fluocinolone.
Possible side effect
Stinging, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, or redness at the application site may occur when this medication is first applied to the skin. These effects should disappear in a few days as your body adjusts to the medication. Contact your doctor right away if any of these serious side effects occur: skin thinning/discoloration, stretch marks, extreme/unwanted hair growth, acne, and "hair bumps" (folliculitis).
Drug interactions
It is not likely that other drugs you take orally or inject will have an effect on topically applied fluocinolone. Tell your doctor if you may use corticosteroids taken by mouth (e.g., prednisone), other corticosteroids applied to the skin (e.g., hydrocortisone), drugs that lower the immune system (e.g., cyclosporine).
Missed dose
Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you consider that you took too much of this medications inform your doctor.
Storage
Store Synalar at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
