General information
Verampil belongs to the L-type calcium channel blocker of the phenylalkylamine class. The formula contains an active ingredient called verapamil hydrochloride. This medicine has been used in the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and cardiac arrhythmia. It is also an effective preventive medication for migraine. It works via relaxing the tone of the smooth muscle which results in dilation of the blood vessels.
Directions
You need to consult a doctor regarding the appropriate dosage intake. Do not give up taking the medicine unless it is permitted by your doctor. Administer the intake orally with a full glass of water. Dosage amount depends on the disease, age and patients’ general conditions. It should be individually administered depending on severeness of the case. To treat stenocardia and supraventricular tachycardia patients should take 40-80 mg three times per day. 480 mg is the daily dose prescribed to treat arterial hypertension. Children under 5 years old take 40-60 mg of Verampil per day.
Precautions
Notify your doctor of any other medications that you might be taking besides this one. Taking this drug with a certain class of other medicines may result in increasing or decreasing the effects or alter them in either drug. Tell your doctor if you experienced AV block, and rapid ventricular response. This medicine is able to impair your reactions, therefore you must be extremely careful while driving or performing any action that requires high concentration of attention and fast reactions. Get up slowly if you sit or lie. In case you stand up fast it can cause dizziness. Avoid consuming grapefruit, drinking grapefruit juice or alcohol during the treatment with this product.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with arterial hypotension, hepatic or renal insufficiency, sinoatrial blockade, sick sinus syndrome, Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome in combination with ciliary arrhythmia. Consult your doctor before taking, in case you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant or breastfeeding as this medicine can cause harm to a fetus and excrete into the breast milk. Breastfeeding should be stopped by a mother receiving this medicine.
Possible side effect
You have to immediately notify your health care professional if you suffer from any bothersome symptoms such as difficulty breathing; inching; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, eyelids; dizziness; lightheadedness; blurred vision; dryness of mouth; fainting; palpitations; nausea; ataxy; gingival elephantiasis; skin hyperaemia; agranulocytosis; fingers numbness; agitation; gynecomastia; acute migraines; stomach pain; muscle and joints pain. An adverse drug reaction can also involve bradycardia, hypotension, tachycardia, stenocardia, asystolia. In some cases it can cause myocardial infarction especially in patients with obstructive coronary disease. This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. Others may occur in some patients and there may be some side effects not known yet. In case you have experienced any side effects not listed above, immediately seek emergency medical attention.
Drug interactions
You must notify your health care practitioner if you are already taking buspirone (BuSpar); clonidine (Catapres, Clorpres, Kapvay, Nexiclon) or any other blood pressure medications; cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune); cimetidine (Tagamet); digoxin (digitalis, Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps); lithium (Eskalith, LithoBid); lovastatin (Mevacor, Advicor) or simvastatin (Zocor, Simcor, Vytorin); an antibiotic such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), erythromycin (E-Mycin, EryPed, E.E.S., Ery-Tab, Erythrocin), rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifater), or telithromycin (Ketek); an antifungal medication such as fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), or voriconazole (Vfend); a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), bisoprolol (Zebeta, Ziac), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), propranolol (Inderal, InnoPran), sotalol (Betapace), timolol (Blocadren), and others; a heart rhythm medication such as amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), disopyramide (Norpace), flecainide (Tambocor), or quinidine (Quin-G); cancer medicine such as cisplatin (Platinol), cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar), doxorubicin (Adriamycin), paclitaxel (Taxol), procarbazine (Matulane), vincristine (Oncovin), or vinorelbine (Navelbine); seizure medication such as carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol) or phenobarbital (Solfoton); theophylline (Elixophyllin, Theo-24, Uniphyl); a sedative such as midazolam (Versed) or triazolam (Halcion); medicine used to treat HIV/AIDS such as atazanavir (Reyataz), delavirdine (Rescriptor), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), or ritonavir (Norvir, Kaletra).
Missed dose
In case you have missed to take a dose of this medicinal product, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take your next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosage schedule. Do not take two dosages right away.
Overdose
If you suspect overdose or suffer from any side effects not listed here, immediately look for medical help and consult your doctor. Symptoms of overdose involve a feeling of being dizzy, light-headed, hypotension, nausea, bradycardia, cardiac arrhythmia.
Storage
Store this product at room temperature between 15-30 C (59-86 F) away of sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets. Do not apply any remnants of the medication after the expiry date.
